“ Location and Name "
Binthenna is a plain in nature (“bin” – land and “Thenna” – plain ) and was like the angel of earth and therefore known as Mahi- Angana. ( “Mahi”- Earth and “Angana” - angel). In ancient era Mahiyangana was also known as Aluthnuwara and in present it is well known as “Miuguna”. The end of the difficult journey via most popular 18 bends (18 wanguwa) from Kandy is there in Mahiyangana Divisional Secretary Division.
Mahiyangana Divisional Secretary Division is situated within the Mahiyangana electorate in Badulla District of Uva Province. Mahaweli River flows from the west of the area and Minipe Divisional Secretary Division which is the border of Kandy District is located beyond that. Padiyathalawa and Dehiattakandiya Divisional Secretary divisions of Ampara District are the east and north borders of Mahiyangana area while Rideemaliyadda Divisional Secretary Division is the south east border.
